From Vision to Value: The Power of Alignment

One of the biggest misconceptions about OKRs is that they’re just about setting ambitious goals. In reality, their true power lies in alignment.
When I consult with organizations, I often ask: Can every person in your company explain how their work today connects to your company’s vision? If the answer is no, then alignment is missing.
Alignment Is the Bridge
In my book, OKRs for All, I describe alignment as the bridge between vision and value:
Vision is where the organization wants to go.
Value is what customers and stakeholders actually experience.
OKRs create the connective tissue between the two.
Without alignment, even the best strategy fractures into disconnected initiatives. Teams optimize for local success instead of global outcomes.
How to Achieve Alignment
Cascading but not top-down. Leadership sets direction, but teams shape their own OKRs that support those priorities.
Transparency across the org. When everyone can see each other’s OKRs, silos break down and dependencies become visible.
Shared outcomes, not isolated tasks. True alignment happens when teams commit to common results—not just their own projects.
A Personal Lesson
When I was at Microsoft, I saw firsthand how alignment unlocked performance. Teams that once competed for resources began collaborating when they could see their work rolling up into shared objectives. It wasn’t about control; it was about clarity.
The Challenge
Ask yourself: If someone joined your company tomorrow, could they trace how their role connects to your highest-level objectives? If not, that’s where to focus.
At Rhythms, we’re building to make this level of alignment effortless. By connecting OKRs directly to the flow of daily work, teams always see how their contributions ladder up to the big picture. See what Rhythms can do for your organization.
